Memory / File / Data Sizes

Generally, “kilo” refers to 1,000, but in computer systems, it traditionally means 1,024. To resolve confusion about data sizes, it was decided in 1998 that the term kilobyte (KB) would represent 1,000 bytes, while kibibyte (KiB) would indicate 1,024 bytes. Similarly, megabyte (MB) would signify 1,000,000 bytes, and mebibyte (MiB) would represent 1,048,576 bytes. This decision was made by the American organization NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to address the longstanding issue of inconsistent usage. However, despite these efforts, the term “kilobyte” has become deeply ingrained in global culture, and the distinction between KB and KiB is still unclear to many.

Data Transfer Speeds

Data transfer speed or file transfer speed refers to the speed at which data is transmitted from one source to destination. Typically measured in bits (bps – note small ‘b’) or bytes per second (Bps – note capital ‘B’). Some of the common file transfer speeds are:
